چکیده

The experimental results of the use of a liquid lithium limiter on FTU are presented. To avoid droplet generation by JxB forces we have adopted a limiter with a capillary porous system configuration. Lithization of the vacuum vessel is performed by exposing lithium limiter to the plasma boundary for three subsequent plasma discharges after that it is extracted. Strong reduction of the recycling is observed due to the pumping capability of lithium that permits on turn operations near or beyond the Greenwald limit with very clean plasma. When the limiter is inserted into the SOL a new regime with peaked high-density profile close to the Greenwald limit has been found. Finally no damage has been observed on the limiter surface with heat loads up to 5 MW/m.

FTU results with the liquid lithium limiter

Since the end of 2005 most of plasma wall interaction experiments on FTU have been focused on the possible use of liquid lithium as plasma facing material. Liquid lithium limiter is an active method to deposit, during the plasma discharge, a lithium film on the walls with prolonged beneficial effects. Reliable operation with very clean plasmas, very low wall particle recycling, spontaneous peak...

Status and Perspectives of the Liquid Material Experiments in FTU and ISTTOK

The main goal of FTU lithium liquid metal experiments was to demonstrate the capability of the Capillary Porous System (CPS), firstly tested on T-11 tokamak, to confine liquid lithium avoiding sudden release as consequence of j×Β electromagnetic force on the surface. These latter should be balanced by the surface tension forces associated to the liquid lithium in capillary channels. Very encour...

OV / 4 - 2 1 Overview of the FTU Results

New FTU ohmic discharges with Liquid Lithium Limiter at IP = 0.7-0.75 MA, BT =7 T, ne0 ≥ 510m, confirm the spontaneous transition to an enhanced confinement regime, 1.3-1.4 times ITER-97-L, when the density peaking factor is above a threshold value of 1.7-1.8. The improved confinement derives from a reduction of electron thermal conductivity (χe) as density increases, while ion thermal conducti...
